I like the idea of instead of cooking with sugar cane, you cook with sugar. Make it so sugar is made from sugar cane using a mill (not sure if it is a cooking or a farming skill). Then you could make it so sugar can also be milled from beets.
I do think that sugar cane should make more sugar then beets though (not sure if we are growing the sugar beet variety :) ). Maybe 1 sugar cane gives 1 - 2 sugar but it takes 2 beets to make a sugar.
