Mail message alert in chat

Given how tiny the text is that shows when we have a new message, and that it's in a corner of the screen where one doesn't often look, it's very easy to miss new messages. There should be an alert in chat when a message arrives, preferably repeated every now and then until the user reads the message. Showing it in the page title might be helpful as well, although that could well get cluttered.
